Does anyone remember when Netflix only allowed you to stream a certain amount of hours of television a month? I do not think I could possibly survive in a world like that anymore. If you are anything like me you have probably spent a few hours, days…. weeks…. (however much time you want to admit) binge watching tv or movies on Netflix. Whether you are just bored or looking for an escape of distraction Netflix is the answer that many of us have been looking for and is always dependable and interesting.

As a chronic binge watcher myself, I know the struggle of looking through the seemingly endless supply of things to watch on Netflix and realizing you’ve basically watched everything you wanted to watch already. Not wanting to go to Hulu and dealing with commercials or paying more for Amazon Prime, it has made me watch shows that I wouldn’t normally seek out on more than one occasion and I have been pleasantly surprised.

For my suggestions on what to watch on Netflix this summer, please visit the links below and reap the benefits of my addiction.

My Favorite Sci-Fi Series.

My Favorite Drama Series.

My Favorite Netflix Originals.

My Favorite British Series.

My Favorite but Unfortunately Cancelled Series.

drama

This is my last in a series of what to watch when your binge watching Netflix but I think that it is an important category that wraps up a few of my favorite shows I haven’t talked about yet. I love a good drama series, especially when I’m bored. All of these shows are great at drawing you in and offering some distraction to ordinary life. Here are some of my favorites.

Lost (6 Seasons)

lostIf you have not already seen this show it is incredible. If you can get past the odd things that happen in the first couple of episodes it really is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. In fact every time I rewatch it I catch things I didn’t the first time around so I would recommend giving this show your undivided attention. This show portrays a group of people who survive a plane crash who need to learn how to exist on a mysterious island. If you don’t like the plot you can at least appreciate the beautiful cinematography.

Dexter (8 Seasons)

dexterDexter is one of my favorite shows. He is probably the best looking serial killer that you will ever see on television but he also has a heart of gold…. well, kind of. Dexter is a blood splatter analyst in Miami and he may not have any emotions but he will definitely make you fall in love with him. This show does have a lot of blood as you can probably guess so if you are queasy this may not be the show for you, otherwise tune in and see how he gets away with murder.

Pretty Little Liars (Currently 4 Seasons on Netflix)

pretty little liarsI mentioned a few “guilty pleasures” of mine on this series of posts, here is another. Pretty Little Liars follows a group of girls dealing with the disappearance of one of their best friends. There are a lot of secrets to unravel and a lot of drama to get through but it is painfully enjoyable to watch. This show is just about to start it’s 6th season so it does drag in a few places but overall, its a fun show if you don’t take it too seriously.

The Borgias (3 Seasons)

the borgiasAnother historical drama for this list, I am sort of addicted what can I say. This show definitely gets a little weird and its far from historically accurate but if you can get over that it’s actually quite enjoyable. This was a showtime series and it follows the Borgia family and their quest for power in Rome. If you are not familiar with the Borgia family, prepare to be shocked at the tom-foolery taking place in the Vatican. You may be shocked by this show but you will definitely enjoy it too.

The Tudors (4 Seasons)

the turdorsThe Tudors is actually one of the better versions of King Henry the VIII’s story that I’ve seen. It is another showtime series so obviously you will need to accept a certain suspension of disbelief, but Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Natalie Dormer are fantastic and the show does a really good job capturing the complexity of all of these characters. You’ll even see a young Henry Cavill before his days as the man of steel.

The 100 (1 Season Currently on Netflix)

the 100Although there is only one season of this show on Netflix it is definitely binge worthy. It just finished it’s second season and is doing pretty well. This show takes place after humans essentially destroyed earth. They flock to space for safety but are running out of resources and send a group of 100 teenagers to earth to test if it’s viable or not and chaos ensues. It sounds crazy but trust me, it works. Give it a change and you wont be sorry.

Bates Motel (2 Seasons Currently on Netflix)

Bates-MotelThis show is sort of messed up but what can you expect following the life of Norman Bates, one of the most notorious murders in cinematic history. If you’ve seen psycho and think you know what will happen in the tv series, you are mistaken. This is Norman Bates as a young boy still in high school and it is wonderfully complicated and macabre. The show is currently in its third season so you have plenty of time to catch up!

When Calls the Heart (Currently 1 Season on Netflix)

when-calls-the-heartThis is another new show but it is soon becoming one of my favorites. It is a Hallmark Channel show believe it or not and is currently in its second season. This show portrays a wealthy woman who decides to take the unlikely course of becoming a school teacher in a town full of coal miners. This show actually has a lot of Drama for a period piece and Jack the Mounty is adorably awkward and chivalrous. The wardrobe is also great which is one of my favorite parts about period pieces. Lots of braided hair inspiration!

Reign (Currently 1 Season on Netflix)

reignLike I said, I am a sucker for the CW. This show is all about the life of the young Mary Queen of Scotts, particularly her time spent at French Court. Now I am not going to lie, I am not particularly fond of who they cast as Francis but that aside this is a really fun show to watch. It’s also one of the few shows that actually acknowledge their historical inaccuracies saying things like, “this will never be remembered in the history books” which I find very amusing.

I think that everyone has noticed that there has been a pretty big shift in television lately. Networks are definitely spending a lot more money on production quality and sometimes shows that are cancelled get new life on online platforms like Community and Arrested Development. My favorite new innovation of this tv-centric era are some of the Original Series being put out by online plaforms like Netflix. Not only are these shows actually turning out to be good, but Netflix puts out the entire season at once which is perfect for the obsessive people like me. These are my three favorites, feel free to share your opinion about your own!

Daredevil

Daredevil-NetflixThis has to be one of the most well done superhero shows that I have ever seen. Not only is Matthew Murdock adorable but he’s a complete badass. He is a blind man but sees the world in a different way enabling him to have some pretty amazing ninja skills. The cast is fantastic and the writing is done very well. Complex characters, amazing visuals, A+ in my book.

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

kimmy schmidtNow I’ve mentioned in the past that I am not usually a huge fan of tv comedies, this show is another exception. Kimmy Schmidt is kidnapped as a young girl and forced to live in a doomsday cult underground. The series takes place after she is rescued and Kimmy has to try to reassimilate into society. I always liked Ellie Kemper while on the office but this character is 10 times more funny and relatable. If you’ve ever felt awkward or weird in a social situation you will instantly feel better about yourself while watching Kimmy Schmidt try to survive in New York with limited social skills and pop culture knowledge.

Marco Polo

marcopoloI have always been a sucker for any sort of historical drama or period piece. This particular show was done extremely well. There was clearly a lot of money backing this project because the way it was shot almost makes it seem like a movie. Historical accuracy aside, the story telling is really nice and it’s really interesting seeing this side of the story. More often than not, the Mongols don’t get a lot of positive representation. This show did a pretty good job humanizing both sides of the conflict and made it very interesting to watch. I wouldn’t call it a family show as many scenes involve a lot of naked women but overall its a great show and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for something new and interesting to watch.

There is nothing more disappointing than starting a show on Netflix only to realize when you are looking for more episodes that the show has been cancelled. Since I am doing a series of posts on binge watching I thought it only fair to pay homage to those shows that have been cancelled too soon. There have been many great shows that have been cancelled over the years before their time, these are a selection of those that upset me the most and are currently available to watch on Netflix. Although they have been cancelled they are definitely worth the watch anyways. If you have any favorite shows that have been cancelled too soon, please feel free to share!

Firefly (1 Season + 1 Movie)

fireflyIf there has been more outrage for a show that has been cancelled I can’t think of one. Firefly only had one season but the cult following the show now has would make you think that there were many more. The show never really had a fair chance but it did have something that many cancelled shows don’t – a movie to wrap up most of the loose ends. Serenity is the follow up to the show and the entire series is one of my favorites ever created. If you want to know more there is even a documentary about the show called “Done the Impossible”.

Twin Peaks (2 Seasons)

twin-peaksYet another show with a cult following, Twin Peaks is one of the oddest shows I’ve ever seen but is also one of the best. This show was prematurely cancelled as well but new episodes are supposedly in the works showing what happened after the two great seasons of this series. Will they live up to the saga that has already won over so many fans? It is too soon tell but maybe it’ll answer some questions that are still a mystery.

The Paradise (2 Seasons)

the paradiseThis show was a real heart breaker for me. I was so excited when it was uploaded to Netflix that I watched the show without doing any research, low and behold it was cancelled after season 2 because BBC thought it was too similar to Mr. Selfridge. This show is so so so much better and sadly we won’t get any more of Denise and her crazy antics at The Pardise. This is a great period piece and its set in what is supposed to be the first major department store. Give it a try and you won’t regret it if you can get over the heartbreak.

The Secret Circle (1 Season)

the secret circleThe secret circle was a guilty pleasure of mine. Very similar in genre to the Vampire Diaries, this CW show unfortunately did not make it past its first season. Fans tried to bring it back by gathering signatures but unfortunately the cost of the show outweighed the demand. With 22 episodes this is a great show but you are left with some major unanswered questions. Give it a try, it’s still worth it!

Starcrossed (1 Season)

starcrossedAlright, I was really upset by this one. I really liked the concept of this show. I’m a sucker for anything the CW produces (with a few exceptions) but this show was also unfairly slashed. Again petitions were signed with no luck. I blame lack of publicity but whatever the reason, starcrossed is no more. This one is particularly frustrating due to some loose ends but the series was great. I’d still recommend it if you don’t mind a good cliffhanger.

AlthIf you are looking to binge watch any British television on Netflix these are some of my favorites that I did not previously mention in the Sci-fi post here.

Sherlock (Currently 3 Seasons on Netflix)

sherlockIf you haven’t already seen Sherlock you have probably been bombarded with gifs and photos from the show if you’ve been on the internet for the last three years. Although there are only 9 episodes, they quality of the story telling and the visuals are incredible. I have always been a Martin Freeman fan so I may be biased but the rest of the internet seems to feel the same way so give it a chance and try not to get too addicted, with only three episodes a year if you are lucky it can be a long wait.

Broadchurch (Currently 1 season on Netflix)

BroadchurchAs a David Tennant fan I had to give this show a try. He was amazing as The Doctor but this series shows a completely different side to this Scott. This drama shows two cops trying to solve the murder of a young boy in a small town. Who could possibly have committed such a horrible act? Well watch the show and find out. This show is very captivating and it draws you in right away. Complex story line, layered cast, overall an excellent show. Second Season is airing now but the whole first season can be watched on Netflix.

North and South (Mini Series)

north and southAlthough this is technically not a television show, its a miniseries, I still felt like I couldn’t mention my favorite British tv on Netflix without mentioning North and South. Set in the industrial age, this period piece shows class conflicts as a well-to-do lady and her family move to an industrial town and seek to find their place in their new world. This is one of my favorite period pieces on Netflix and its definitely worth the watch.

Torchwood (4 Seasons)

torchwoodI mentioned Doctor Who in the other post and failed to mention the spin off Torchwood. I fell in Love with Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who, this series shows what he is doing when he is not with The Doctor. This show is a lot more adult than Doctor Who so be prepared for some more mature content.

Robin Hood (3 Seasons)

robin hoodThis is a great take on the classic Robin Hood Tale. Lots of familiar British actors in this series and some great love triangles. You will even see a young Richard Armitage (aka Thorin Oakensheild) playing Sir Guy of Gisborne. For those of you who didn’t notice he’s also the male lead in North and South. Overall, this is a great series and if you’re looking for some action, romance and great costuming this is the show for you.

The IT Crowd (4 Seasons)

the it crowdI am not generally a huge fan of television comedies but I absolutely adore The IT Crowd. This show is adorable and quirky and the characters are hilarious. You will definitely get addicted to this show really quickly and the episodes are short so its a great show to watch if you don’t have the luxury of spending 12 hours in front of the television.

space
June 2nd, 2015 by admin

This has to be my favorite category of shows to watch on Netflix probably because the genre is so vast. Everything from space adventures to vampires and witchcraft it has something for everyone. There have been many sci-fi shows to grace Netflix with their presence but these are just a few of the current shows on Netflix that I think are worthy of a marathon.

Doctor Who (Currently 7 Season on Netflix)

david tennantAny self-respecting sci-fi fan has at least attempted to watch Doctor Who. Whether you like the old version or the new this is a great series that I think everyone would enjoy. The Doctor will wisk you away to far off places or to different times while introducing you to some of the most loveable fictional characters you’ll ever see on tv. Everyone has their favorite Doctor, mine is Ten, have you found yours?

Supernatural (Currently 9 seasons on Netflix)

supernaturalAh yes, Supernatural. This is on top of my binge watching list for several reasons. Not only does it have the classic magical sci-finess that I love but it also has hunky men and bromances. Not to mention 9 seasons long so for those of you who get obsessed with shows, this is a great fit. It’s still on the air and the guys just keep getting cuter.

Buffy (7 Seasons + 5 Seasons of spin off)

buffyBuffy is a classic series that I think everyone should watch at least once, if not more. This show has a great story arch and really well developed characters. If you really enjoy the show there is also a spin off called Angel for some more of the Buffy universe. That show has a slightly different vibe but does take place at the same time of the show, so the characters do cross over unlike many spin offs. If you’re into girls kicking ass and hot vampires, this is the show for you. It’s been off the air for a while but a total of 12 seasons is definitely binge-worthy.

Merlin (5 Seasons)

merlinThis is one of my favorite shows. Who doesn’t like a show about King Arthur and Merlin? This is a unique take on the classic tale of the round table and its done pretty well. Plus if you’ve already watched Buffy you’ll be able to see Giles again and who doesn’t love that? This show is also a bit refreshing in the midst of all the super high tech or teeny bopper vampire shows (not that I don’t like those). Beautiful wardrobe, great story and magic! Who could ask for more? This show has been off air for a while but its not super dated.

Sliders (5 Seasons)

slidersAh yes, this is a classic. The show is a little dated but if you like classic sci-fi like star trek or star gate you will definitely like this show. Sliders will take you to different dimensions, some remarkably similar to the one we live in but many more that are totally new and wonderful. At five seasons this show makes for a great marathon of light scifi fun!

Being Human (5 Seasons UK, 4 Seasons USA)

being humanA vampire, a werewolf and a ghost living together may sound like the start of a joke but it actually makes for a great series. This show is unique, however, because it was a British show first and than Americans remade it. I do prefer the British version myself but the American version is also pretty good. Think sci-fi version of the office, the plot is remarkably similar but they both have their own merits and are both definitely worth watching. Both series have since ended leaving us with 5/4 seasons of each to enjoy.

Charmed (8 seasons)

charmedI loved watching Charmed when I was growing up and it is still one of my go to shows when I don’t know what else to watch. The charmed ones graced television for 8 great years and it is still playing on tv so that should tell you something. This show offers fun twists on classic supernatural tales as well as great romances and girl power.

Once Upon a Time (Currently 3 Seasons on Netflix)

once upon a timeOnce upon a time is a good show but I’ll be honest, season 3 wasn’t my favorite. The show has built some great characters and has taken a really interesting take on a lot of our classic fairy tales. The show is still currently on the air so not all of the episodes have made it onto Netflix but you can get the rest of them on hulu. A great show but you’ll have to wait till it comes back on to continue watching which makes it a bitter sweet marathon show.

Vampire Diaries (Currently 5 Seasons on Netflix)

vampire diariesThe man in the picture is really the only reason you need to start watching this show. Damon Salvatore is one of my favorite fictional vampire characters. He is sassy, beautiful and devastatingly misunderstood. This show has its good moments and its moments that aren’t so good but you’ll always have the beautiful man to the left to look forward to plus more good looking men and a fairly interesting story line. This show is one of my guilty pleasures and I just can’t seem to quit it. Currently in its 6th season but the first 5 are on Netflix.

The Walking Dead ( Currently 4 Seasons on Netflix)

the walking deadThe Walking Dead is a great show if you don’t mind a lot of gore and violence. If you do not already know, this show is set in the zombie apocalypse and deals with many of the issues that people might face in a world without morals or proper hygiene. The real reason to watch this show would be the fantastic Norman Reedus who makes a crossbow and greasy hair look way better than they ever should. The show Just finished their 5th season but the first 4 are on Netflix for your binge watching enjoyment.
